ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
- Prodigy Camp alum Ben Kadie has been accepted to USC and NYU’s film schools. Fellow alum Isaiah Halvorsen just got into Tisch School on a full scholarship, and Peter Zachwieja and Keri Alison just got into Loyola Marymount.
- Heather Hughes was in the top 3 percent for the Academy Awards Nicholls fellowship and has been awarded a residency at Hedgebrook.
- Amie Barrodale was accepted to the Iowa Writers Workshop with a Maytag fellowship.
- Livia Notoharjono was accepted into the USC Graduate School (they accept only 8 out of 500 applicants).
- Prodigy Camp Alum Rikke Heinecke was also accepted into USC’s Film Production Program.
ACTORS
- Prodigy Camp graduate Nick Robinson starred alongside Alison Brie and Nick Offerman in The Kings of Summer, which showed at Sundance and SIFF in 2013.
AUTHORS
- Beverly Magid published her novel, SOWN IN TEARS, about a Russian Jewish woman whose life and country are in chaos. The novel is available in print and Kindle at www.amazon.com and www.vromansbookstore.com.
- Ryan Winfield published his novel SOUTH OF BIXBY BRIDGE through Amazon.com.
AWARD-WINNING ALUMNI
- Persephone Vandegrift became a finalist in Wildsound’s First Scene Screenplay Contest for her screenplay Death of a Mortal Woman and finished second in her category in the Sarasota TVME contest for her treatment of a historical documentary called Women of the American Revolution.
- At the Action on Film Festival in 2012, Jessika Satori won four awards: Winner, WITHOUT A BOX Best Script and Winner, Best Music Production; Runner Up; Best Dialogue and Best Dramatic Short Script.
- Heather Hughes and Kate Wharton were semi finalists in the Kairos Screenplay Competition. Kate Wharton and Alex Tobias took first and second prizes, respectively, in Jeff Kitchen’s national screenwriting competition in 2006.
- Heather Hughes has advanced, placed or won in the San Diego Film Festival, Slamdance, Austin Film Festival,Beverly Hills Film Festival, One in Ten, Page, Phoenix Film Festival, and was a finalist for Sundance.
- Kristi L. Simkins’ short film, SOMETHING SPECIAL, won Best Narrative Short at the Rainier Independent Film Festival.
- Margie Slovan directed two new plays for Stone Soup Theater’s new play festival, one of which won “best of the festival”.
- Mark Lundsten and Josh Bourland’s SO THIS PRIEST WALKS INTO A BAR was granted an Official Best of Fest Award at Indie Spirit Film Festival (at Colorado College).
- Amie Barrodale was awarded the Plimpton Prize by The Paris Review.
- Andrew Iseminger’s short LITTLE PRICKS advanced to the semi-finals at the Vail Film Festival Screenplay Contest and was accepted as a finalist at the Beverly Hills Film Festival in 2013. His Arrested Development script entitled MADOFF WITH THE MONEY received an Honorable Mention at the 2011 Las Vegas Film Festival, .
- John Harden’s screenplay OCCUPANT made it into the quarterfinals of the Nicholls Fellowship for Screenwriting. He also wrote a fundraising short for the Sonoma County YWCA.
- George Thomas Jr. was a finalist in the 2008 Seattle International Film Festival’s PitchSlam with his comedy, NOT MY PROBLEM, about a secretly despondent self-help guru who gets caught up in international intrigue while advising the President of the United States.
- Judy Williamson’s script ESCAPE TO AMERICA, INC. made the Quarter Finals of the Page Award International Screenwriting Contest in 2011. Ranielle Gray was a Quarter Finalist for the 2008 with WISHFUL THINKING.
- Jessika Satori was named Best Female Filmmaker at the Action On Film Festivalin the Short Films category for her short film, SO SHALL YOU REAP which was edited by fellow alum Travis Stern.
- Travis Sterner and his team won the SIFF Brotherton Community Champions contest with a mini-documentary about Harold “Pepper” Roberts and the American Lake Veterans Golf Course. With the award came a $5000 donation from Brotherton Cadillac to the American Lake Veterans Golf Course to help both disabled and able-bodied soldiers and veterans. He also worked as co-Producer and Cinematographer on a feature length documentary with Academy Award winning Director Michael Korolenko.
- Patrick Race received a Rasmuson Grant to begin development of a documentary on economic colonialism in Alaska, and finished a difficult documentary on a local drunk driving accident. It exhibited at the San Diego Comic Con in July 2011.
- Andy McCone and Robert Parks won the 2008 IFP/Seattle Spotlight Award forNIGHT BLIND. Kate Wharton joined as associate producer. It also screened at the 2012 Seattle International Film Festival.
- Kent Jameson won first place in the Screenwriting Category of the 2008 Pacific Northwest Writers Association Literary Contest.
- Damian Stonebraker and David Sharkey’s “Wrong Side of the Track” won the audience award in the 48-hour Film Contest. Their team, Remote Viewing Aparatus, included other FilmSchool alumni.
- Rene Rudge and Katherine Clegg tied for second place in the Great American Short Screenplay Contest that TheFilmSchool sponsored along with the Seattle International Film Festival.
- Johnny Broderson made the finals in the 2008 Port Townsend Film Festival’s 48hr Fast Filmmaking Competition. Johnny won it two years in a row previously.
- Randy Webb finished 2nd in the 2008 Northwest Screenwriters Guild PitchFest with his script, ORDINARY JOE.
- Ranielle Gray made it to the 2nd round of the WA State Screenplay Competition for 2008, presented by the Northwest Film Forum.
- Winda Benedetti’s feature screenplay FREAK won the Washington State Screenwriting competition in 2006 and her screenplay SUNDOWN advanced to the final round in the 2007 competition.
- Lisa Halpern took second place the Washington State Screenwriting Competition in 2005, was a quarter finalist in the Writer’s Network Screenplay competition, and the American Zoetrope screenplay contest. Lisa was also placed on the Consider list of Screenwriting Magazine‘s AAA contest.
BUSINESS
- George Thomas Jr. wrapped up two competitive internships doing industry coverage for production companies in L.A.
- John Jacobsen consulted on a book that was all abuzz in the legal community.TWELVE HEROES, ONE VOICE by Carl Bettinger explores hero-centric storytelling methods, to help trial attorney’s understand how to show the jurors that they must be the heroes, and “save the day” with a verdict that speaks not just for their clients, but for the cause.
- Programming Director (and founder) Eric Morgret wrapped the 3rd Maelstrom International Fantastical Film Festival and is preparing for many more years to come.
- Marci Barrett is writing a weekly column called “Tell Me A Story” for Royal Archivist Publishing.
- TheFilmSchool’s Executive Director John Jacobsen hosted THE ARTIST TOOLBOX for public television with the help of several TFS alums Kevin Sabourin, who filmed and edited and Joshua Bourland, who co-produced.
FESTIVAL SHOWINGS
- Shawn Telford’s feature film BFE will be at the Champs Elysees Film Festival as a part of US in Progress.
- John Henry Summerour’s wrote and directed the short film CHICKAMAUGA, which screened at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) in 2012.
- Sam Graydon had a short in SIFF Fly Films in 2012. Sam also had two short films screen at SIFF in 2012: PRETTY FACE, which he wrote and directed andBUNKER, on which he served as Director of Photography. He also wrote and directed the the short JENNY starring Gary Busey in 2011.
- Kevin Klar made the 35th anniversary Seattle International Film Festival’s celebratory short film with director Rick Stevenson.
- The BAFTA award winning female duo Bert & Bertie, who attended TheFilmSchool in the Spring of 2010, directed the London-based Intandem’s latest feature, LUCIDITY. Their film, THE TAXIDERMIST screened at SIFF in 2012.
- Heather Hughes and Kate Wharton were writers for the SIFF Fly Films.
- Shawn Telford’s short film THE LAST VIRGIN, which he wrote and directed was shown at SIFF in 2012.
- L. Gabriel Gonda directed and LaDora Sella wrote and produced BRIGHTWOOD, which played at SIFF in 2012.
- Previous winner of the Great American Short Screenplay Contest, Kristi L. Simkins, has attracted the attention of the international film community. Her short film, SOMETHING SPECIAL, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival, and the Rainier Independent Film Festival.
- Mark Lundsten and Josh Bourland’s SO THIS PRIEST WALKS INTO A BAR was accepted at Ojai, Northwest Film Forum’s Local Sightings Film Festivals, Seattle International Film Festival, Indie Spirit Film Festival (at Colorado College), and have been given distribution by IndieFlix for web streaming.
- Chris Oliver, Ramona Guentzel, and TFS Executive Director John Jacobsen worked together to produce the short film SPINNING, which has played at many festivals, including SIFF.
- Steven Schardt co-wrote/directed feature film TREATMENT which was selected out of 5,624 other entries in 2011, a record year for submissions, to be an official selection at the Tribeca Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival. He and Sue Corcoran helped produce the Sundance Special Jury prize-winning feature HUMPDAY, which also was nominated for the Grand Jury prize. Acquired by Magnolia Films, the film also showed at Cannes Film Festival 2009. Steven screened yet another picture he produced at Sundance: YOUR SISTER’S SISTER, filmed on San Juan Island and starring Golden Globe Winner Emily Blunt.
- Elena Hartwell adapted Ivan Doig’s Prairie Nocturne for Book-It Repertory Theatre. Her short play, ENDLESS SEA, premiered with MadLab in Columbus, Ohio in May as part of their Theatre Roulette play festival.
- Caleb Slain’s NEW YORK ACCENTS was accepted by the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival.
- Andrew Iseminger’s latest sitcom was accepted into the Beverly Hills Film Festival.
- Cornelia Moore’s script and directing endeavor,THE DARK HORSE, was selected to premiere at SIFF in 2008.
- ARTHUR, a short film written by Joshua Bourland, the 2008 winner of the Great American Short Screenplay Contest, and produced by Chris Oliver and directed by John Jacobsen has been playing in festivals across the country including SIFF. He produced the short AIRLOCK with director Gerrin Tramis.
- Winda Benedetti was selected to join one of the three teams making a Fly Film for the 2008 Seattle International Film Festival. Winda wrote a script called SHUT EYE for the team headed by co-directors Andy McCone (another FilmSchool graduate!) and Joe Shapiro. Her short films GEEK LIKE ME and INTERVIEW WITH THE ZOMBIE have appeared in festivals around the country, including the One Reel Film Festivaland The California Independent Film Festival.
SCREENWRITERS, DIRECTORS, AND PRODUCERS
- Jeff Leisawitz just completed his short film as a writer, director, and producer!MYSTIC COFFEE is about a wise and magical barista who offers advice along with her beverages.
- Kevin Klar teamed up with TFS alumni to make FETCH, which he wrote and directed and was produced by Chris Oliver and Rick Stevenson. Klar and Stevenson also co-wrote 5000 DAYS PROJECT which Rick directed. Another TFS alum, Kristi Simkins, worked as the editor for the film. She was hired by Stairway Studios out of Florida to write the screenplay for a feature film which is scheduled to go into pre-production in early 2012.
- Heather Hughes and Kate Wharton optioned their “tween” musical HABIT FORMING to Academy Award-nominated director Matthew Diamond, director of Disney Channel’s hit ‘Camp Rock’. Gary Pearl of Pearl Pictures is slated to produce the project. After signing with The Nethercott Agency (LA), Heather and Kate have recently completed a project for musician Kenny Rogers and were hired to write an original movie for The Hallmark Channel. Heather’s other film, AMAZING GRACIE, was optioned in the Summer of 2011.
- Margie Slovan has been busy in the theatre world. She directed RIVER ICE, a play by Olympia writer Scott Timmons. It is the true story of the daredevil Czech parachutists who assassinated Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi who was known as the “Butcher of Prague.” Margie also Slovan directed and co-produced SEVERED STRINGS by Nancy White and MISS DIXIE MAKES A DEAL by Caitlin McGrath. She was an Asst. Director on CHARLIE’S DILEMMA, an independent film about what happens when Charlie Brown grows up. She also directed two new plays for Stone Soup Theater’s new play festival.
- Elena Hartwell wrote a play for ADWAS, an organization supporting victims of sexual and domestic abuse in the deaf community, which performed in April 2012 in ASL and was voiced over for a hearing audience.
- Cornelia Moore wrote and directed CAMILLA DICKINSON. She adapted it from a novel by Madeleine L’Engle. It boasts an impressive cast including Cary Elwes (THE PRINCESS BRIDE, GLORY) and Samantha Mathis (GREY’S ANATOMY, PUMP UP THE VOLUME). She also produced JourneyQuest Season Two.
- Sue Corcoran’s feature GORY GORY HALLELUJAH is also available at major retailers and was recently picked up for international distribution.
- Deb Matthews was in pre-production on a short called DOWN THE DEBT, a fun way of looking at a great idea to drastically reduce the national debt – and all without Congress raising taxes.
- Winda Benedetti’s screenplays SUNDOWN and FIST have been optioned by Lockspring Pictures.
- Lisa Halpern has optioned a screenplay to Lockspring Productions.
TEACHERS
- Jessika Satori (Alum Summer 2007) Jessika launched a slate of new classes for directors, actors, and producers. Check out her website at www.audaciousaperture.com. At the Poppy Jasper Film Festival in Morgan Hill, CA, Jessika interviewed Hollywood composer Harry Manfredini (Friday the 13th) and an actors workshop.
- Elena Hartwell led three workshops at the Whidbey Island Writer’s Conference, applying dramatic techniques to fiction. She also led the workshop “Write Dialogue Like a Playwright” with the Unicorn Writers Conference in MA.
