The Film Director's Priorities: Text, Acting and Editing

Tom Skerritt and John Jacobsen will teach this course. |
If directors are the architects of film, then actors are the artisans of a collaborative team working together to realize a singular vision. Through on your feet exercises, casting sessions, the exploration of text, rehearsal, and the shooting and editing of scenes, participants analyze and apply the directorial skills required for a successful artistic collaboration with performers. The language of film is studied, basic coverage and editing technique is taught.
But the real emphasis is not on camera, which is merely a device to capture what you put in front of it, but on the process of translating text to actors. Students select one scene (dramatic or comic), then cast, rehearse, shoot, edit, and present the scenes in class. Topics include analyzing the script, working with actors, defining objectives, creating dramatic conflict, and the elements of characterization. Actors for class scenes are selected during in-class auditions and final scenes are performed on camera. Required reading in advance: Judith Weston’s Working with Actors.
Limited to 16 participants at $595 each, 20 observers at $295 each. Students provide their own scenes which they must submit in advance to be accepted as participants. Scenes should be limited to 4 pages, with no more than 4 characters.
This is not a lighting class; it is a class that emphasizes working with text and actors, and then teaches how to use the camera to best capture that work.
